Caption and media limits, network by network
Captions run from 300 characters on Bluesky to 5,000 on Facebook and YouTube. Here is each network's limit on text, pictures and video.
Captions run from 300 characters on Bluesky to 5,000 on Facebook and YouTube. A post carries one media item on Pinterest, TikTok and YouTube, and up to 20 on LinkedIn and Threads. Munshi checks each network's version against that network's rules before anything is scheduled.
The limits for each network
- Instagram: 2,200 characters. Up to 10 images or one video, and it needs one or the other. Post, Reel or Story.
- Facebook: 5,000 characters. Up to 10 images, one video, or text alone. Post, Reel or Story.
- LinkedIn: 3,000 characters. Up to 20 images, one video, one PDF as a document post, or text alone.
- Threads: 500 characters. Up to 20 images, one video, or text alone.
- Bluesky: 300 characters. Up to 4 images, one video, or text alone.
- Pinterest: 500 characters. One image or one video, on a board you choose.
- TikTok: 2,200 characters. One video.
- YouTube: a description of up to 5,000 characters and a title of up to 100. One video, as a Short or a Video.
X is not on this list. It is coming soon and cannot be connected yet.
What a network will not post without
- Instagram needs a photo or a video: “Instagram needs a photo or video.”
- TikTok and YouTube need a video. An image in its place is refused.
- A Reel needs a video on both Instagram and Facebook. So does a YouTube Short.
- Pinterest needs a board (“Pinterest needs a board ID.”). A video pin also needs a cover image.
- YouTube needs a title (“YouTube needs a video title.”). Privacy starts at Public and Made for kids at No. You can change both.
Mixing media, and the smaller fields
- A video goes out alone: “A video has to be the only attachment on the post.”
- A PDF posts only to LinkedIn. It also has to be the only attachment.
- The composer takes up to 20 media items in one post. A network that takes fewer says on its own tab how many to remove, such as “Instagram takes up to 10 media items. Remove 2.”
- Smaller fields have their own limits. A TikTok title takes up to 90 characters. A Pinterest title takes up to 100, and its Alt text up to 500. LinkedIn's Media caption takes up to 400.
Where Munshi tells you
You write once in All platforms. Each network's tab then checks its own version. A tab that breaks a rule shows a mark, with the reason written above the buttons, such as “12 characters over Instagram's 2200 limit.” Nothing is scheduled until every version passes.
The shared caption box itself stops at 5,000 characters. File types and sizes are in files Munshi takes.
If something goes wrong
“Instagram needs a photo or video.”
Add a picture or a video, or take Instagram off this post. Instagram does not take a text-only post. The other networks can still go out as text.
“A video has to be the only attachment on the post.”
Remove the images from the post. Or open a network's tab to give that network its own media.
“Pinterest needs a board ID.”
Open the Pinterest tab and choose the board the pin should go on.
